Green Vault Museum

Five men who were found guilty of participating in the 2019 theft from the Green Vault Museum have lost their appeal. The Federal Court of Justice reviewed their case and did not find any legal error had been made that harmed the defendants. Last May the men received sentences ranging from 4 years and 4 months to 6 years and 3 months. For those of you unfamiliar with this crime, the Green Vault is a museum in Dresden and is one of the oldest museums in the world. On November 25, 2019, thieves set a power transformer on fire in order to take out the museum’s security systems. They entered through a window they had previously broken. They managed to steal 21 pieces of jewelry valued at €116.8 million. You can learn more about it here.*

In 2019 thieves broke into the Green Vault museum in Dresden and stole $123 million worth of jewelry and gemstones that belonged to the Kings of Saxony. Some of those stolen pieces were recovered in 2022 and now they are going back on display. Since the courts no longer needed them, the jewels were returned to the museum. As you can imagine, some of the items were damaged during their time away from the museum, thankfully, not too badly and barely noticeable. So, the Green Vault has chosen to display them in the condition they were found in. Never fear, there are still plans to restore them at a later date. You can learn more about it here and here or watch it here.
